Great Yarmouth Races

The coastal town of Great Yarmouth has many attractions for visitors. Situated in Norfolk between the Norfolk Broads and the sea the town offers convenient access to both and has been a seaside resort of great importance since the 18th century. Visitors and holidaymakers certainly appreciate the beach and Golden Mile of promenade attractions and every one appreciates the town’s other popular attraction which is Great Yarmouth Races.

Great Yarmouth Races, inside rail While not one of the most famous racecourses in the world, Great Yarmouth attracts a better standard of trainer and racehorse than may be expected. This is largely due to the location, which is just 70 miles from Newmarket, the headquarters of British horseracing. Sometimes referred to as ‘Newmarket-on-Sea, Great Yarmouth has proved to be a good trial circuit for first class two year olds, among them Punctilious and Quija Board who both won on their debuts here in 2003.

The oval track is flat, covering one mile and five furlongs. Perfect then for the long striding galloper, there is a straight mile and run in of five furlongs. The highlight of the season at Great Yarmouth is the Eastern Meeting, a three day event in September with the leading race being the John Musker stakes, run over a mile and a quarter.

24 fixtures are held each year in total, including family fun days and evening racing with live music entertainment following the last race, all included in the price of admission.

With the high quality of racing on display and a location which is in one of the country’s foremost holiday destinations, Great Yarmouth races prove very popular with casual racegoers looking for a good day out with the family as well as attracting a keen and knowledgeable crowd. The new Grandstand, opened in 2004, and wealth of hospitality and entertainment options has helped cement Great Yarmouth’s reputation for providing a first class race day experience for all.

Racegoers to Yarmouth have two main enclosures to choose from, the Premier Enclosure and the Grandstand and Paddock Enclosure and both have full amenities and ample drinks, dining and betting facilities. Admission badges for the Grandstand and Paddock Enclosure allow access to terrace viewing over the course within two grandstands, the Parade Ring and Winners Enclosure for all the pre- and post-race action, and to the Family Lawns and Children’s Adventure Playground. This is the ideal option for a family day out at Great Yarmouth races.

Those with badges for the Premier Enclosure can enjoy all the benefits of the Grandstand and Paddock as well as access to the Premier Enclosure in which they can view the races from the Lord Nelson Grandstand, or from the elegant environs of the Trafalgar Restaurant whilst enjoying some fine dining.
